The projects I've been involved in have been as varied as their locations. So far I have worked for six months in Aberdeen and for the past year have been based in Plymouth, working as part of the safety team at DML. Working on site is a great experience, as it allows you to develop a close client relationship. It also means that I can see the project I'm working on, and if I have any questions I can actually go onto the plant and see how it works.
I'm currently working in the Project Engineering group, which is structures based but I have also covered projects with other groups, such as Thermo-Fluids and Safety. I've worked on structural and stress analysis projects for nuclear power stations and gas turbines and also been involved in CFD modelling projects of baby ventilators, hospital flowmeters, oil platforms and nuclear power stations.
Reasons for joining
I joined Frazer-Nash because of the variety of work that it offered. Also I liked the idea of working in a small but growing company, where I wouldn't be counted as 'just one of the graduates'.
Career Direction
I've already been promoted since joining Frazer-Nash and expect to attain Chartership with the IMechE in just over a year. Flexibility is the key and Frazer-Nash encourages this from the start, so the numbers of projects that you could find yourself working on are considerable. However they make sure that this doesn't compromise your technical ability as you still have your main discipline and group in which you are anchored.
Location
The Burton office is on the edge of Burton-on-Trent just off the A38 making access from numerous locations easy. It's a new office with great facilities and is growing all the time. It has a relaxed atmosphere and the helpfulness of the more established members of staff is fantastic. Organised social events are always well attended and lots of fun.
