Current Role Minimize

I started as a graduate with Frazer-Nash working in the Acoustics and Fluids group in Dorking, having completed my doctorate in experimental aerodynamics.

So far I’ve been involved in a variety of projects ranging from CFD analysis of ship exhausts, to hydrodynamics of high-speed boats to fatigue life prediction within mechanical systems. For much of the work up to date computer modelling and analysis tools were utilised, however, there is plenty of scope for conducting calculations by hand and learning to use some of the analysis software written in house. Frazer-Nash encourages technical diversity and therefore you can expect to develop skills outside what you might consider your main engineering discipline.

Another important area of my work is concerned with assisting the Fluids groups across the other offices of the company. I enjoy this as it broadens the scope of work with which I am involved and the people with whom I have contact.

Reasons for joining Frazer-Nash?

I joined Frazer-Nash as I felt it offered an academically challenging role with the opportunity to learn new analysis techniques and apply my existing technical skills in a commercial environment. From the start, a lot of emphasis is placed upon the importance of business generation and project management, which are new skills I need to learn. In order to develop business skills, Frazer-Nash encourages new engineers to undertake responsibility for projects, typically within the first year of joining.

Where do you see your career going?

I hope to apply for Chartered Engineering status with the IMechE in two years time, and the company supports the continuing development of its staff in order to meet this goal. In the not too distant future I hope to manage some projects of my own and learn more about the business generation and marketing aspects of the company.

Location

The Dorking office is located in Surrey just south of the M25 and approximately 20 miles outside London. The extensive train and road links nearby mean that it is easy to commute from the surrounding areas. Dorking itself is a sizeable town, but slightly further afield are Guildford, Brighton and of course London.
