Powerful Modern Techniques
For many years naval architects and designers have considered the flows of water around the hulls of vessels. The flow of air around the superstructure was only considered for particularly demanding applications, usually in the military world. However, the owners of luxury private vessels can now take advantage of these design techniques to ensure a comfortable environment free from exhaust plumes, and a safe platform for helicopter landings.
Safe Helicopter Operation
Helicopters landing on ships can be affected by both the wake created by the superstructure, and the ingestion of the exhaust plume into the aircraft’s engines. At Frazer-Nash Consultancy we take the techniques we’ve developed to ensure a safe, low turbulence approach path to aircraft carriers – where we are world leaders – and deploy them into yacht design. Nothing should compromise landing safety.
Comfort on Deck
Engine exhaust plumes – and other plumes from the galley or air-conditioning systems – cannot be allowed to reduce comfort on deck. At all speeds the owner expects to be able to enjoy their asset free from disturbance from the ship’s systems. We apply our military stealth technology to ensure that plumes have low temperatures and do not impinge on decks. These techniques are part of the suite of tools we use to reduce the thermal signature of special forces craft.
Numerical Wizardry
All these techniques are based upon advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics techniques. Customers such as Airbus, Thales and BAE SYSTEMS have made use of our skills and powerful computing base for many years to solve tricky problems. Now these methods are available to the discerning purchaser of luxury craft as they strive to achieve perfection.
Bond of Trust
Finally, we understand that our yacht clients expect and deserve complete confidentiality. We deliver an efficient and discrete service in all areas – wake, noise and hydrodynamics.
