Contract to help guide naval projects of the future

September 2007

Systems and engineering technology consultancy Frazer-Nash has been awarded two new contracts, one to support the development of the Future Surface Combatant (FSC) capability, and the second to support the Director of Mission Systems.

Following the MoD's need for investment in a new, more flexible, capability across the sea, land and air domains to replace the Royal Navy's Type 22 and Type 23 frigates, the Ministry of Defence has appointed Frazer-Nash to provide crucial support to its Future Surface Combatant (FSC) programme.

Frazer-Nash's work runs until March 2008 and involves the consultancy working closely with the Frigates IPT to develop a detailed systems engineering plan for the project, specifying what is required of the new combatant in terms of the overall platform capability - as well as laying the foundations for the acceptance regime. The contract follows on from the success of related work Frazer-Nash completed in March this year in scoping FSC Combat System options.

In a separate contract, Frazer-Nash has been awarded an important management consultancy study for the Director of Mission Systems.

The MOD is investigating the organisation needed to provide a centre of excellence for Mission Systems, a specialised area of work providing advice on combat systems issues for a given platform, be it an aircraft, vehicle or ship. Frazer-Nash is conducting a study to highlight the skills that will be required and recommend how the new group would interface with existing procurement teams engaged in delivering capability. The objective is to draw conclusions on how to make most effective use of these valuable combat system resources to the benefit of future MOD projects.

Chris Edwards, Defence Director at Frazer-Nash, commented on the new contracts:

“Following the MoD’s announcement that it will be procuring new additions to its surface fleet, attention has now turned to the exact form that these new capabilities will take. This FSC contract win provides us with an excellent opportunity to provide high-level systems engineering work, and means we are playing a core role in the development of important projects for the MoD.”
