The concepts of sustainable development (SD) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are fundamental to the long-term viability of society and business as a whole. The aims of sustainable consumption and production, minimised climate change, protection of resources and sustainable communities can only be achieved through a strategy building on awareness of our environmental and social impacts. Effective SD or CSR strategies build investor and customer trust and confidence, thereby creating a more sustainable economic balance through good governance.

Adequately addressing SD is particularly important in procurement and the supply chain. In an increasingly competitive market, suppliers are under greater pressure to convince their customers that their business is socially, ethically and environmentally responsible. They need to demonstrate (not just claim) that SD principles have been extensively incorporated into their goods, project or service.
Effective Sustainability Appraisal or Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) can highlight environmental and social costs early in the design of a project, which allows designing out, managing the risk or internalising the costs of these to enable a more equitable solution, robust to stakeholder scrutiny.
Our staff have particular experience in helping suppliers gain a competitive advantage by providing SD support throughout the procurement process from supplier approval, through tendering to implementation. We work closely with designers to help them incorporate features such as versatility, adaptability and re-use, and have specific models to optimise life-cycle costs, availability and maintainability.
