Availability, Reliability and Maintainability (AR&M) are key considerations in most product developments. Many equipment procurement contracts require that a formal reliability programme be carried out and that reliability should be considered equal to performance. With the recognition that in-service costs can far exceed initial purchase costs, contractors are required to pay as much attention to reliability as to performance.
To meet this requirement, Frazer-Nash Consultancy offers a range of services which include planning, bid support, AR&M and logistic analysis, programme management and detail design appraisals. These services are based on many years of experience in defence (land, sea and air), transport and industrial applications.
Through its access to engineering design and analysis skills, Frazer-Nash is able to bring a practical understanding to its AR&M approaches. Our analysis skills allow us to predict product performance in detail and evaluate the effects of design changes, resulting in effective, reliable and durable equipment. Frazer-Nash's experience, which includes mechanical, electronic, servo and software systems working in a wide range of environments, safety management and Manprint skills, allows us to provide a comprehensive and integrated service.

The range of services covers the complete cycle of a product’s life from feasibility to disposal. Examples include:
- Procurement Strategy planning and tender documentation preparation
- AR&M programme planning to various commercial, Defence and Military Standards
- AR&M assessment of equipment using modelling, prediction and failure analysis techniques
- Planning and monitoring of AR&M testing
- Design audit to international standards
- AR&M and design improvement programmes
Design for Reliability
Frazer-Nash has particular expertise in the design of intrinsically high reliability or safety critical equipment which fully utilise our AR&M and design skills. Performance is optimised by integrating reliability into product development from its earliest stages and by considering the appropriate trade-offs. In particular, reliability audits can be used as a basis for identifying risk areas to be examined during development. Such audits help to focus testing programmes, thereby reducing development time and costs.
