Job Description

To support the continued growth of our Australian Business, particularly our Canberra office, we are seeking an experienced Defence Systems Engineering consultant to join our Concept and Requirements Development Team.

In this role, you will be responsible for analysing, advising and supporting clients in capability design and definition. This will include: development of capability documentation for review and approval by the Investment Committees as part of the new Defence Capability Life Cycle (CLC); supporting Smart Buyer and Contestability Workshops; and delivering to the agreed Project Execution Strategies.

You will  have experience and knowledge of the Defence CLC acquisition processes for Gate 0 to Gate 2 approval and have supported the identification of capability needs in todays complex, contested and congested operational environments. Experience in technology development strategies and the application of appropriate processes for the complexity and risk of defence capability projects would be highly regarded. Initially the role is focussed on our Defence clients but we do however operate across a number of industries, providing a varied range of systems engineering support in the rail, resources and energy sectors.


You will have a strong technical background and proven track record with experience in some or all of:

  • Interpretation of clients' operational and technical needs
  • Concept definition and solution architecture development
  • Development of project execution strategies
  • Development of operational concept documents
  • Development of functional and performance specifications
  • Compliance against regulatory frameworks
  • Technical leadership on projects
  • Providing systems engineering coaching / training.

Essential Criteria

  • A degree in Systems Engineering or related disciplines
  • Experience in developing operational and functional needs for complex systems as part of the Defence Capability Life Cycle acquisition process.
  • Able to lead and deliver systems engineering activities, especially the development and analysis of candidate design solutions for complex systems.
  • Demonstrable experience of direct liaison with customers and management of client relationships.
  • Experience working within or supporting CASG or CDG. 
  • Ability to operate independently, within defined parameters, with little or no direct supervision.
  • Be an Australian citizen with an active (or eligibility for) an Australian Department of Defence security clearance.

Desirable Criteria

  • Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or INCOSE CSEP certification
  • Knowledge and experience of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and techniques.
  • The ability and ambition to deliver systems engineering technical solutions across other Market Sectors.
  • Understanding of the application of system safety to technical programs.
  • Preparation of proposals
