Salary £35,000 to £45,000 pa depending on experience
You will be working within a team that applies their skills to complex ocean physics, marine platform engineering and / or underwater acoustics problems, predominantly relating to acoustic and non-acoustic signatures of marine platforms and systems.
We require an enthusiastic engineer or scientist to join our small team of experts to help model the acoustic and non-acoustic signatures of these systems. The opportunity exists to take key responsibilities within the team and develop a niche role within Frazer-Nash. We are therefore seeking a motivated engineer or scientist, preferably with substantial professional experience related to the role, to help us to develop our underwater acoustics / signatures workstreams for our clients within the defence industry.
Bringing a combination of sought-after skills and wider knowledge of the defence industry, the successful candidate will spend their time solving exciting technical challenges for our clients.
As an Acoustics / Signature Engineer you will be responsible for:
Technical: Developing models, using a variety of techniques as appropriate, for predicting the underwater radiated noise and / or non-acoustic signatures from marine platforms and systems.
Investigating the fundamental drivers of noise and vibration behaviour on marine platforms, building an understanding of the relevant systems and the interaction of those systems with others on the platform.
Helping our customers to address risks and issues that cause unacceptable underwater signature performance, developing and helping to implement cost-effective solutions.
Managing projects in accordance with our ISO-9001 accredited processes and acting as technical lead.
Working with colleagues within and outside of your discipline to deliver multidisciplinary projects.
Authoring and verifying technical deliverables.
Helping shape our service development plans and strategies to maximise the value we provide to the global market. Developing new business by representing Frazer-Nash at conferences, seminars and prospective client meetings.
Responding to enquiries and writing bids.
Our projects are remarkably diverse and can last from a few weeks to many years of sustained support. You will typically be involved with multiple projects at any one time. You will meet and communicate with customers to understand their requirements and develop your project plan to deliver the desired outcomes and insights. Frazer-Nash empowers its staff to manage the delivery of the project themselves at an early stage in their careers. Reporting to your Group Leader, you will be accountable for your own work, but also help support others in the team.
This role is based in our Leatherhead office but we would also consider applications for the same role based in our Bristol office.
Although primarily a technical role, you will be joining a consultancy where we expect you to work across our business and with our clients. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are crucial as is the ability to make structured decisions, solve problems, and show initiative and ownership internally and externally.
The successful applicant will meet the following minimum requirements:
A Mechanical Engineering based degree (at least a 2:1), or an applicable engineering, maths, or physics degree.
A strong foundation in the fundamental science of noise and vibration or in oceanography / ocean physics, pertaining to fluid dynamics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials properties etc. and their impact on acoustic or non-acoustic influences.
Demonstrable experience in underwater acoustics, platform underwater signatures, sonar system design and operation or other work relevant to the described role. This may come through either commercial work or research activity.
An aptitude for communicating methods and results to specialists and non-specialists through writing high quality reports and presenting technical work to customers, peers and at conferences.
Have an interest in working with our clients to apply methods (from state-of-the-art computational methods to targeted and astute hand calculations) to help understand and solve operational issues.
Working level capability in modern programming tools such as Python or Matlab.
Be a strong team player but with the ability to work under minimal supervision.
It is to your advantage if you meet any or all the following additional requirements:
Experience in the application of numerical modelling e.g., ANSYS, ACTRAN, COMSOL etc.
At least a basic understanding of sonar system theory.
Highly desirable to have working knowledge in data science areas e.g., artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Experience in writing proposals, client liaison and business development.
Be working towards or have acquired Chartered Engineer Status.
Due to the nature of the work that Frazer-Nash Consultancy undertake, candidates will be required to undergo pre-employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.
