You will be working within a team that applies their skills to complex ocean physics, marine platform engineering and underwater acoustics problems, predominantly relating to acoustic and non-acoustic signatures of marine platforms and systems.

What you will be doing:

We require an enthusiastic graduate to join our small team of experts to help model the acoustic and non-acoustic signatures of these systems. The opportunity exists to develop the role within the team and build key responsibilities within Frazer-Nash. We are therefore seeking a motivated graduate engineer or scientist, with a firm grounding in one or more of the underpinning sciences. The successful candidate will spend their time solving exciting technical challenges for our clients, which require a thoughtful approach to understanding complex physical behaviours generating and analysing models, using a variety of techniques as appropriate, for predicting the underwater radiated noise and / or non-acoustic signatures from marine platforms and systems. The opportunity exists to develop the role within the team and build key responsibilities within Frazer-Nash. We are therefore seeking a motivated graduate engineer or scientist, with a firm grounding in one or more of the underpinning sciences, to help us to deliver our underwater acoustics / signatures workstreams for our clients within the defence industry. The successful candidate will spend their time solving exciting technical challenges for our clients, which require a thoughtful approach to understanding complex physical behaviours.

  • Helping our customers to address risks and issues that cause unacceptable underwater signature performance, developing and helping to implement cost-effective solutions.
  • Project management: As a graduate, you will be introduced to, and trained in, managing projects, in accordance with our ISO-9001 accredited processes.
  • Working as a team within and outside of your discipline to help us deliver multidisciplinary projects.
  • Authoring and verifying technical deliverables. Consultancy:
  • Assisting the development of new business, for example by representing Frazer-Nash at conferences, seminars and prospective client meetings.
  • Supporting the responses to enquiries and the writing of bids. Our projects are remarkably diverse and can last from a few weeks to many years of sustained support.
  • You will typically be involved with multiple projects at any one time.
  • Frazer-Nash empowers its staff to manage the delivery of the project themselves at an early stage in their careers.
  • You will be working as part of a team, often comprising people from different technical groups.
  • Although a technical role, you will be joining a consultancy where we expect you to work across our business and with our clients.

Requirements

What You Will Need

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are important for the development of our graduates.
  • You will be expected to be able to critically question what you see, to solve problems that build on your technical understanding, and show initiative and ownership for your ideas and work.
  • The successful applicant will meet the following minimum requirements: A high-quality degree 2:1 minumum in an appropriate engineering, maths, or physics subject.
  • Your degree or subsequent qualifications should provide a foundation in the fundamental science of noise and vibration or in oceanography / ocean physics, pertaining to fluid dynamics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials properties etc. and their impact on acoustic or non-acoustic influences.
  • A good mechanical engineering-based degree, with the right subject modules, should provide the 2:1 minimum required knowlwdge of modern programming tools such as Python or Matlab.
  • Be a self-motivated team player with the ability to work with supervision and with others with different technical backgrounds.
  • It is to your advantage if you meet any of the following additional desirable abilities: Experience in the application of numerical modelling e.g., ANSYS, ACTRAN, COMSOL etc. At least a basic understanding of sonar system theory.
  • Highly desirable to have working knowledge in data science areas e.g., artificial intelligence and machine learning.
  • Due to the nature of the work that Frazer-Nash undertake, applications will be required to undergo pre-employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.
