Our Renewables Technology group supports wind turbine OEMs, foundation designers, developers and third party suppliers across the floating offshore wind industry. Our group is involved at every stage of the project lifecycle, from pre-concept development through to detailed design, certification and commissioning with a clear focus on addressing the technical challenges the OEM and foundation designer face during each stage. We hold a market leading position in this industry having supported the successful development of a number of floating demonstrator projects over the last 8 years and are now utilising this experience to help lead and inform the industry on the key technical challenges for future projects.

Frazer-Nash are leaders in the provision of loads and control support in the floating wind industry and believe this technology will help meet the aggressive renewable generation targets that are now in place worldwide. However, the move from fixed bottom to floating foundations introduces significant technical and economic challenges that require deep technical insight and innovation to overcome. One of the key technical challenges the industry faces right now is understanding how (and when) to perform detailed coupled loads analysis of the WTG-foundation to help inform design activities at an earlier stage. At a project level, this is increasingly being driven by the lack of early engagement of the WTG OEMs with the foundation designer and developer as their time is squeezed due to the number of projects being considered. Helping to address this issue will be pivotal in ensuring the next generation of floating wind projects can start on schedule and operate safety for the lifetime of their project.

We are therefore seeking a motivated and experienced professional engineer to help us deliver on our extensive portfolio of projects and further develop our services of floating offshore loads and analysis support across the industry. Bringing a combination of sought-after skills and a wider knowledge of the wind industry, the successful candidate will spend their time solving exciting technical challenges for our clients, all of whom are working on the next generation of floating wind projects being considered around the world today. In parallel, the role will provide the successful candidate the opportunity to take a lead role in developing our business accounts across a wide range of clients.

This is a highly exciting time to be a part of a growing technical team right at the fore-front of the floating wind industry.

This role is comprised of three main components:

• The provision of WTG and foundation model development, loads analysis, and controller tuning support to key stakeholders within the floating offshore wind industry.

• Engagement with clients and the wider supply chain supporting floating offshore wind, both in the UK internationally.

• An opportunity to enhance and develop your commercial prowess to help lead engagement on key issues faced by the industry.

Technical disciplines that would be beneficial to this role include the following, although other relevant experience would also be considered:

• Structural loads assessment and analysis

• Familiarity with relevant WTG and foundation design standards for offshore wind

• Experience in some, or all of the following related disciplines: aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, floating substructures, moorings or wind turbine control systems

Whatever expertise you feel you bring to this role, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and help to grow our floating wind capabilities, combining your technical skills with insights into the industry to further develop our business accounts across a wide range of clients.

The successful applicant will meet the following minimum requirements:

• Degree in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics or related discipline

• Demonstrable experience in the offshore wind industry through work with developers, OEMs and / or consultancies.

• Experience of delivering loads and structural analysis using hydrodynamic and aeroelastic tools such as Orcaflex, openFAST or similar.

• Be a strong team player but with the ability to work and deliver independently

• Proactive personality

It is to your advantage if you meet any or all the following additional requirements:

• Loads and Controller tuning experience in offshore floating wind.

• Experience and intimate knowledge of the Integrated Loads Analysis (ILA) process for a commercial offshore wind project

• Experience in conducting controller tunings in aeroelastic software’s (openFAST / Orcaflex)

• Previous consultancy experience

• Experience in writing proposals, client liaison and business development

• Have Chartered Engineer status

Due to the nature of the work that Frazer-Nash Consultancy undertake, candidates will be required to undergo pre-employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.
