Wind Energy - Assessing wind resource in complex terrain

Client
Onshore wind developer

Business Need
Increasing the number of economically viable wind development sites

THE CHALLENGE

As more wind farms are built, the availability of future sites is reduced due to land constraints. Sites with complex terrains, whose return on investment were considered marginal, are now being re-examined. These sites require detailed modelling techniques to accurately predict the complex air flow over the terrain in order to establish there viability. In these challenging terrains methods previously used for modelling tend lose accuracy and require more specialist skills.

OUR SOLUTION

Such marginal sites put increased demands on wind resource and wake effects modelling tools. Wind resources in these areas are difficult to accurately predict due to complex flow features such as separated flow, recirculation and even cold air drainage effects. Our specialist expertise in complex flow modelling and access to RANS CFD solvers with dedicated high performance computing resources, means we can produce simulations of complex flow regimes quickly and accurately. Exploiting current simulation technology involves applying best practice and the know-how to interpret results. With 35 years of experience in modelling complex flow regimes and a proven capability in wind resource assessment, Frazer-Nash can advise on wind site developments on even the most challenging of terrain.

THE BENEFIT

A major concern for wind farm developers is the accuracy of simulation results, and the impact they could have on the profitability of a project. Applying the right tools to identify new, viable and profitable sites for developing future wind farms will play a key role in de-risking projects for investors.
