THE CHALLENGE

The increase in the scale of wind farms currently proposed and being developed presents a number of challenges around installation, operation and performance. Developers need to understand the key design constraints and the cost and energy yield predictions in order to establish the optimal layout.

 

OUR SOLUTION

Our multi-disciplinary approach to wind farm design demonstrates the impact that individual aspects can have on the design. Improving energy capture through design, may result in higher costs. Our approach works by parametrically defining array layouts, then calling a series of more specialised analytical models to evaluate their potential. The results allow the design space to be explored quickly and thoroughly.

The results were validated using data from current offshore arrays to predict aerodynamic losses, caused by turbines operating in the wakes of others. Using our knowledge of fluid dynamics to interpret the results in the context of larger arrays, we were able to identify the best models to use for new, larger designs and to suggest how these models could be developed to improve speed and accuracy.

By using cross-discipline models, a multitude of proposed wind farm layouts can be analysed quickly and accurately to select the optimal design for the site. This delivers significant cost savings during the development of the project while also enhancing the business case and reducing investment risk.
