A team from Frazer-Nash recently helped students enhance their abilities at solving real-world engineering problems, by taking part in the Loughborough University/Engineers without Borders 12-hour ‘Designathon’.

Around 100 students took part in the design marathon on Saturday 24 March, tackling a brief based on designing solutions to improve life in a city experiencing multiple infrastructure, energy and resource issues.

Four of Frazer-Nash’s experts helped the students to develop their ideas – Group Leader Duncan Livingston, Senior Consultant Craig Hattersley, and Senior Engineers Laura Church and Jeremy Monk asked the teams a number of difficult questions to simulate real industry concerns. Duncan was also one of the judges for the event.

Commenting on the students’ enthusiastic approach to the day, Laura said:

“In just twelve hours, the students came up with some really good ideas to help tackle the problems facing the fictional city, as outlined in the brief. It was great to see them develop their initial ideas, building prototypes and coming up with solutions to issues. At the end of the day, each team had three minutes to pitch their solution to the panel of judges before the well-deserved winners were announced.

“We really enjoyed taking part in the Designathon, helping the next generation of engineers, entrepreneurs and problem solvers to hone their skills. We’re definitely hoping to get involved in other Loughborough University and Engineers without Borders’ events in the future.”
