News & Events - Frazer-Nash Consultancy appointed to report on Southend-on-Sea’s Pier transport system

Frazer-Nash has been appointed by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council to look into the transport options for the town's iconic Pier ‒ and to identify a preferred option.

Tim Myall, Rail Business Manager at Frazer-Nash explains:

"Southend Pier is a major landmark in Southend-on-Sea, and at almost one-and-a-half miles long, the longest pleasure pier in the world. As a vital part of the local economy, we're committed to undertake a detailed study on the transport options available to the Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and to identify a preferred option that will meet the needs of our client, the local community and visitors.

"Choosing the right transport system for the town's Pier is an important part of our client's vision: to ensure that Southend's status and growth are supported by facilities, services and employment which match and outperform the town's competitors."

Frazer-Nash's commission will enable the selection of a preferred option and then the approved brief will be used as the main specification document for the development of a new system, including the appointment of main contractor. The project aims to deliver a transport system that complies with relevant legislation and is environmentally sensitive ‒ whilst minimising future running costs.

Ann Holland, Executive Councillor for Culture, Tourism and the Economy at Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, says:

"The Pier is so important to us, in terms of its history, heritage, tourism value and popularity, and we are committed to ensuring it continues to be a part of Southend-on-Sea for generations to come.

"As part of this vision, this long-term project will look at what preferred options for pier transport are best to take forward and seek funding to deliver in the future."
