News & Events - Frazer-Nash supports Type 23 frigate update programme


Engineering consultancy Frazer-Nash has recently completed a contract to support the sustainment of the Type 23 Frigate. 

As the platform life is planned to be extended by 15 years, it is vital that the existing power generation and distribution capability is sufficient to support the frigate's future power requirements.  There is also a requirement to update the Machinery Control and Surveillance (MCAS) system in parallel, as the two systems are inextricably linked. 

Frazer-Nash was responsible for the initial development of all the Systems Engineering documentation including the User and System Requirements. The company also conducted a feasibility study for the MCAS system to assess the possible technological solutions.

The MCAS system provides remote Ship Control Centre facilities to manage the marine engineering systems of the Type 23 Frigate, including the control and monitoring of the propulsion and ancillary systems.

Lt Cdr David Hedgecox RN, the Requirements Manager for the Type 23 Frigate, commented, "We are very pleased with the proactive, professional and innovative manner with which Frazer Nash executed this tasking, allowing rapid progress on the requirements development for what is quite a complex project."

The Type 23 frigate entered service in 1989 and was originally designed for a life of 18 years as the Royal Navy's principle Anti-Submarine Warfare platform. The class has since seen two life extensions and covers a wide variety of roles around the world.
