News & Events - MOD Enabler contract won by Frazer-Nash and Mathworks

Frazer-Nash and MathWorks have won a contract to provide electrical systems modelling support to the Ministry of Defence's surface ships and submarine teams for the next four years.

Won following a competitive bidding process, the enabler contract marks the start of a closer working relationship between the engineering consultancy and the software house. Frazer-Nash has worked with MathWorks on a range of projects over the past seven years, but this contract represents the first formal teaming of the two firms.

The contract will see the companies providing mathematical modelling expertise on marine electrical power systems for a range of the MOD's defence platforms. In practice, this will mean the team may be asked to model anything from a proposed electrical power system for a new vessel, through to individual components on board existing in-service platforms.

By working together, the teaming of one of the UK's largest independent engineering consultancies and one of the leading technical software developers offers significant benefits to the MOD. As well as being able to tap into the extensive defence experience of both companies, the team will be able to swiftly respond to requests from the MOD to model complex 'real world' scenarios.

Electrical systems models will be built, primarily using the MathWorks tool Simulink, and run against a range of different operating scenarios.  The results can then be interpreted so that recommendations can be made to the MOD on a range of engineering modifications that could be made to either improve the system's efficiency or meet certification requirements for the surface ship or submarine.

Pat O'Shaughnessy, Business Manager for Naval Surface Ships at Frazer-Nash, said:
"The major benefit of modelling naval and submarine electrical systems using MathWorks software is that we can run millions of design permutations and quickly see how these affect the integrity of a vessel's overall electrical system. By removing the need to reproduce physical models at each stage, we are helping the MOD save both time and money.

"Frazer-Nash's relationship with the MOD stretches back more than thirty years and we bring to this contract a large, skilled and responsive team that can provide MOD with engineering expertise of the highest standards. Coupled with the superb software capabilities offered by MathWorks, we believe the MOD has at its disposal a team of formidable engineering and technical talent."
