News & Events - Frazer-Nash provides independent validation to RISSB in Australia

Engineering consultancy Frazer-Nash has been awarded a contract to work with the Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB) to provide an independent validation of the draft Rail Systems Interoperability Standard AS7450.

The Interoperability Standard will provide principles, considerations and processes for use by Rail Infrastructure Managers and Accredited Rail Operators when introducing or upgrading Rail Infrastructure, Rolling Stock, Train Protection and Control systems and human resources across Australia. This Standard is considered to be of extreme importance to the Australian rail industry where a lack of interoperability has presented a significant challenge to the efficient operation of national rail operations for many years.

Frazer-Nash will be combining the skills of Dr Ian Watson, who is the Systems Engineering lead for their Australian Business with Bruce Elliott of Arbutus Technical Consulting. They will work with RISSB and provide comprehensive recommendations and expert guidance on the development of the Standard.

Ian has extensive experience in the rail industry having previously worked with the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) in the UK and more recently helping ensure delivery of a complex brownfield package for the Melbourne Regional Rail Link. Bruce Elliot has an international reputation in the industry as the author and Editor of the "Yellow Book", the UK's de facto reference for Rail Safety.

Commenting on the new contract, Ian said, "We are delighted to be working with RISSB on this important project. The Standard will provide a framework for infrastructure and rolling stock providers as well as rail operators to understand how to work towards interoperability. The skills and experience of Bruce and I complement each other well and we look forward to helping to refine the draft Standard to ensure that it meets its goals of improved safety and cost-effectiveness for the Australian rail industry.
