News & Events - Re-engineering the Hunterston B nuclear reactor's CO2 process plant

As a leading engineering systems consultancy, Frazer-Nash has won the contract with Hunterston B nuclear power station to re-engineer and enhance its CO2 process plant in a competitive tender process. The work will ensure the system can support the entire duration of the plant's life extension before decommissioning.

The plant will be safer and more reliable as a result of upgrading the system design, ensuring the swift, safe and efficient delivery of cooling CO2 around the reactor ring main. Frazer-Nash will be adopting a systems engineering approach to improve ease of operation and maintenance.

In a first for the plant Frazer-Nash is working with the operations team at Hunterston B to fully develop the requirements of the re-engineering work.

Chris Jones, Business Manager at Frazer-Nash said"We have a strong pedigree in delivering across discipline engineering solutions for the nuclear industry and are delighted to have won this significant contract directly with Hunterston B power station to support its safe operation and life extension. It is a particularly interesting project as we are going to be able to work with the end users of the equipment that we are re-engineering to ensure the delivery of an optimal solution."

Frazer-Nash will be delivering the project with a multidisciplinary engineering design team that draws together specialist expertise in a variety of engineering fields including control and instrumentation, electrical engineering, process plant design, human factors, system performance assessment and reliability engineering to create the optimal engineering design solution.

Once user and systems requirements work is completed the down selected concept solution will be engineered within a challenging four month timescale.
