News & Events - Frazer-Nash shares flow expertise at offshore events


A presentation to be given by Dr Graham Hawkes at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' (IMechE) Offshore Engineering conference in December will showcase Frazer-Nash's subsea flow expertise.

Graham will be giving an update on Frazer-Nash's flow-induced vibration assessment of the Shah Deniz II manifold, in a technical paper to be delivered at the event on Tuesday 8 December.

The Offshore Engineering 2015 conference is the IMechE's primary showcase for offshore engineering technology.​ Experts will be presenting papers on issues at the leading edge of modern engineering, showing how problems have been solved. Topics to be covered include major hazards and process safety, asset life extension, the use of computational fluid dynamics, subsea technologies, decommissioning, well integrity and human factors.

The Shah Deniz pipeline, which will deliver gas to markets in Europe, will travel 3,500km along a route known as the Southern Gas Corridor, including 500km of subsea pipeline, some of which will lie at depths of over 800m below the surface. Shah Deniz Stage II will add 16 billion cubic metres per year (bcma) of gas production to the nine bcma produced by Stage I.

Graham's expertise in flow was also recently showcased at September's SPE Offshore Europe event. At this conference, Graham presented on 'risk-based flow assurance design for deepwater projects' as part of the ITF forum on ultra-deepwater challenge. This forum considered the issues facing operators looking at future offshore field developments in water depths greater than 3,000m.

Graham's presentation provided an insight into the Risk-Based Flow Assurance Toolkit (RiBFAT), which is being developed within a joint industry project between Chevron, Woodside and Frazer-Nash. The objective of RiBFAT is to develop a framework to support the investment decision-making process at an early stage in the project life-cycle.

Themes discussed in the presentation included how RiBFAT is helping inform the decision-making process (particularly for challenging and deepwater assets) by:

  • Collating industry experience, data and know-how
  • Understanding the Flow Assurance risk profile over time and cost drivers
  • Tracking and managing uncertainty
  • Identifying the most promising design concepts
