News & Events - Ofgem appoints Frazer-Nash to assess Network Innovation Competition entries

Frazer-Nash Consultancy (FNC) has been appointed by Ofgem as a technical consultant to support the Network Innovation Competition (NIC), which assesses proposed innovation projects.

The NIC, which was introduced as part of the new RIIO (Revenue = Incentives + Innovation + Outputs) price controls, is an annual opportunity for gas and electricity network companies to compete for funding for the development and demonstration of new technologies, operating and commercial arrangements. RIIO is Ofgem's framework for setting price controls for network companies.

The Electricity NIC is split into two categories; Distribution and Transmission. In 2014, FNC was chosen as an assessor for the Distribution strand, as well as the Gas Distribution competition. Due to a successful collaboration last year, FNC has this year been awarded the consultancy role to deliver analysis across all three of the assessment strands; Electricity Distribution, Electricity Transmission and Gas Distribution.

Anuj Nayyar, Frazer-Nash's power transmission and distribution business manager, said: "Our electrical and electronic engineering offer draws together strong technical expertise and academic rigor from across the business, so we are really pleased to have been chosen by Ofgem to support with the assessment of NIC submissions; we look forward to seeing the range of innovative projects that enter."

Each year Ofgem runs three competitions to help Britain's energy networks become smarter and more cost-efficient, in turn helping to accelerate the development of a low carbon sector and deliver other environmental benefits and cost savings to consumers.
