Frazer-Nash Consultancy has won its first project with Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS) under the new Naval Architecture Services framework: a multi-year, multi-million framework aimed at progressing trans-global transportation of nuclear materials.

NTS is a specialist organisation within the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). It plays an important role in supporting the UK’s nuclear industry and its international commitments by operating a fleet of three ships built to the INF code: the International Maritime Organisation's Code for the Safe Carriage of Irradiated Nuclear Fuel, Plutonium, and High-Level Radioactive Wastes on Board Ships. The NTS fleet enables nuclear materials to be transported internationally in the marine environment in compliance with the relevant safety and security standards.

The project, delivering naval architecture advisory and task-based support, will see Frazer-Nash providing expert guidance on complex ship operations and modifications.  Various tasks will be undertaken such as exploring the new and novel technologies that can be used to reduce fuel consumption of their fleet.

The project will be delivered and supported by specialists in naval architecture, nuclear lifting, and technology management. Their work will provide NTS with a clear, actionable output to further improve and enhance the operation of their three ships.

Nial Greeves, Market Director Energy and Infrastructure at Frazer-Nash set out the importance of this contract award for the company and the wider global nuclear sector: "Nuclear Transport Solutions is a key player in the global nuclear transport sector. Winning this first project marks the start of what we believe will be a strong and enduring relationship providing expert advisory services to this important client, and opens the door to future opportunities across their fleet and wider operations.”

"This is a technically challenging scope that demands knowledge of maritime engineering, nuclear safety, and regulatory compliance across multiple industries. Frazer-Nash was chosen because we demonstrated all these strengths in abundance utilising the world-renowned expertise of our nuclear safety, marine technology, technology management, and naval assurance groups."

"We know that the global nuclear industry is going to see significant short- and medium-term demand in naval power plant for merchant shipping, floating nuclear power plants and for safe and secure nuclear transportation solutions as small and advanced modular reactor fleets come online. We’re proud that our 40-year track record in supporting full-life cycle nuclear and our decade spent supporting Blue Chip new nuclear technology developers has proven attractive to our clients who value quality, responsiveness and technical depth."
