As the UK continues to turbocharge the expansion of nuclear power as part of the UK government’s clean energy superpower mission, and drive to build more clean homegrown power to ensure energy security, we are proud to announce that Frazer-Nash Consultancy has been awarded a position on the multi-year, multi-million pound Nuclear Justification Framework for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
Starting in October 2025, the brand-new government framework will run for five years. Our experts will support the licensing activities for UK nuclear new build innovation across a range of different nuclear technical disciplines. The company joins the small pool of suppliers appointed by Defra to provide streamlined access to expert technical advice which supports 'nuclear energy regulatory justification’. This mandatory process formally requires demonstrating that the societal benefits of introducing a class or type of nuclear practice outweigh the potential health detriments, and a positive decision must be made before any new nuclear energy technology can be adopted in the UK.
Kevin Murray, Market Group Manager, Nuclear at Frazer-Nash said: “Frazer-Nash is a trusted, strategic advisor to government and the energy sector on new nuclear. With the UK Government firmly committed to kickstarting a golden age of nuclear in this country and ensuring secure, resilient, home-grown clean energy, we know that there will be an increasing need for independent, trusted, expert technical advice to ensure the safe and successful deployment of new nuclear technologies. We are delighted to have gained a position on the Defra framework – a testament to our proven track record as a trusted supplier on complex nuclear frameworks. We now stand ready to support Defra with the opportunities to come in making nuclear new build a reality.”
We have over 40 years of supporting in-service nuclear plants and a decade advising new nuclear sector clients. Our multi-disciplinary team which will support the framework comprises experts in fields representing our full nuclear lifecycle and value chain capability: sustainability and environmental assurance; value management and techno-economic assessment; nuclear and process safety; nuclear decommissioning; nuclear steam raising plant (NSRP) development and manufacturing consultancy; naval and radiological protection assurance; cybersecurity; technical assurance; nuclear market business development.
To further bolster our strength and position on the framework, we have subcontracted two organisations, Sirius Analysis and Cyclife (part of the EDF group), which have worked with us in a similar capacity for other frameworks, providing resource resilience and additional nuclear expertise.
