News & Events-Frazer-Nash engineer wins Rolls-Royce award

John Aveson, an Engineer in the Materials Performance Group at Frazer-Nash, has been awarded the Rolls-Royce Howes and Ruffles Award for the Best Doctorate Paper.

The Howes and Ruffles Award is given out annually by Rolls-Royce in recognition of the best paper published by a student funded by the company.

The paper named 'On the origin of sliver defects in single crystal castings' published in Acta Materialia in 2013 was based on John's PhD work on the solidification of Nickel-based superalloys for turbine blades.

John undertook the work while he was a PhD student at the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre at the University of Cambridge.

The award was presented by John Rishton, CEO of Rolls-Royce at the 2014 Sir Henry Royce Awards for Technical Innovation.
