News & Events-Australian defence group shares news of acoustic signature prediction tool developed with Frazer-Nash

The Australian Defence Science and Technology Group (DST) has today (23 January) released details of a new acoustic signature prediction tool, which has been developed in partnership with Frazer-Nash Consultancy over several years.

The Australian Rapid Assessment Tool (AusRAT) is an extremely powerful tool used to model the acoustic signatures for all classes of naval vessel. A world first, it is capable of being applied to naval platforms including both surface ships and submarines.

DST Defence Scientist Dr Stephen Moore, who played an instrumental role in the AusRAT project, said:

"The ability to predict the acoustic signature during design and construction is critical to achieving the low signature requirements of a modern naval fleet.

"External benchmarking has demonstrated that DST has world-class expertise in this area and identified AusRAT, in particular, as being a world-class capability."

The tool will be used to predict the acoustic signature of the proposed designs for the Australian Future Submarine programme (SEA1000) and the Future Frigate programme (SEA5000), to confirm they meet Australia's requirements.

DST has also confirmed that the Ministry of Defence has evaluated AusRAT through a series of case studies, endorsing its capabilities and exploring opportunities to partner with Australia and DST in further development.
