News & Events-Submarine propulsion and noise expertise to be showcased at UDT and Warship 2017

Frazer-Nash experts, Chris Carter and Kevin Hamson will be sharing their expertise on submarine propulsion systems and noise at the Undersea Defence Technology (UDT) and Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA) Warship conferences, taking place in May and June.

Chris, who is Business Manager for Underwater Technology at Frazer-Nash, will discuss 'Rim drive propulsion in the underwater defence sector: applications, benefits and challenges' at UDT on 31 May. His paper will describe the development of rim drive technology and the key attributes that make these systems attractive for a range of underwater applications.

Also on 31 May, Frazer-Nash Principal Consultant, Kevin, will highlight the issues of 'Underwater radiated noise from electrical propulsion systems', outlining the particular noise challenges that electric propulsion presents. He will explore possible modelling approaches to noise generation in electric propulsion systems, and will examine some of their more unusual acoustic aspects and how these can be addressed through careful design.

UDT, the underwater defence and security community's exhibition and conference, takes place from 30 May to 1 June in Bremen, Germany, and brings together professionals from the military, industry and academia to focus on cutting edge technologies, and the world's increasing diversity of threats and challenges. The UDT conference, titled: 'Optimising the Constants by Maximising the Variables' will explore how technology, science and skills can be used to further Undersea Defence.

Chris Carter will also be presenting on 'Management of flow generated noise on naval platforms' at Warship 2017 on 15 June, describing a programme of work that that has developed a range of tools and techniques for managing noise from fluid systems during the design process, and that supports decision making and design trades.

Warship 2017, organised by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, will take place on 14 and 15 June in Bath, and will focus on Naval Submarines and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs).
