News & Events-Advances in underwater acoustics on the agenda at ICUA2020 conference

The International Conference on Underwater Acoustics (ICUA2020) will take place in Southampton from 6 to 10 July, with presentations on the latest research, applications and advances in the field of underwater acoustics.

Taking place during the International Year of Sound, a global initiative to highlight the importance of sound and related sciences to society, the event is organised by the UK’s Institute of Acoustics (IOA).

The ICUA2020 conference is taking part in Southampton, which in 2020 is marking the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers’ departure from the city to sail to the New World. The IOA is also celebrating a milestone in 2020, as it is 50 years since its first A. B. Wood medal was presented – an annual award bestowed alternately to UK/European or US/Canadian researchers in the field of underwater acoustics.

Frazer-Nash Principal Consultant, Kevin Hamson, who is on the IOA’s organising committee, said:

“I’m really looking forward to ICUA 2020, where around 300 international delegates will have the opportunity to share research and develop new collaborations. Alongside my role on the organising committee, I have been leading some interesting work on underwater acoustics within Frazer-Nash. Topics have included acoustic scattering, flow noise generation, and propeller noise generation and radiation: about which I’d be delighted to speak to conference participants.

“The work of the organising committee started around a year and a half ago, and with a number of keynote speakers already in place the event is shaping up to deliver lots of interesting and thought-provoking discussions. It has been a privilege to be part of this effort, and the session dedicated to past recipients of the A. B. Wood Medal promises to be particularly informative and inspiring.

“There is a strong emphasis on encouraging young scientists and engineers into the field of underwater acoustics at ICUA 2020. There will be an ‘Early Years’ event at the end of the first day where aspiring students can engage directly with representatives of organisations and employers active in the practice of underwater acoustics.”

“If you’re attending the event, please do come and say hello.”
