Deconstructing complex infrastructure

How we optimised major infrastructure works at Sellafield using simulation and modelling

Sellafield chimney

Question: Which method is best for deconstructing a complex facility in Sellafield?

Approach:

We developed a discrete event simulation to compare options for the deconstruction project, highlighted risk reduction strategies, and created visualisations of the sequences for stakeholders.

Our approach helped the varied groups of stakeholders to develop a shared view of the challenges associated with the complex project.

Applicability: This approach could be applied to any construction project, i.e., possession planning etc.

Benefits: As a result of our work, potential bottlenecks were identified as well as options that could save over 100 days of work in a risky environment: reducing costs, time, and improving safety of the project.
